Building healthy
communities
I N THE PAC I F I C NOR THWE S T,
we’re lucky to live
in three of the healthiest states in the country. Alaska,
Washington, and Oregon are all listed in 2013’s list of
the healthiest states, according to Health.com. That
means we’re in a great position to build some of the
nation’s healthiest local communities. When it comes
to creating healthy practices in your community, what
can you do?
■ ■
Choose health.
Healthy practices start at home.
Choose fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins instead of
processed foods. Opt for exercise, even simple walks
through the neighborhood. Schedule immunizations
and physicals to help keep your health on track.
■ ■
Think local.
Make small changes to improve
your health. Can you reduce air pollution by
walking or biking to run errands? Is there a safer
route for your children to get to school? (Check
to learn more.)
■ ■
Get involved.
Look to the broader community
for opportunities to improve the health of your
area. Attend city council and zoning meetings
to effect change. Take advantage of resources
provided by your local government by visiting
Volunteer or contribute to organizations that are
striving to improve your community’s health.
At PeaceHealth, part of our mission is to promote
the just distribution of health care resources. We offer
community health activities like exercise groups,
support groups, educational events, and wellness fairs.
We also provide services for those who otherwise may
not be able to afford care.
Throughout this issue, look for the donor-
supported designation to see how your
generous contributions to the PeaceHealth
Foundations help improve the health of
individuals and your community.
